My Teaching Philosophy
I have an insatiable desire to know how music works. How does Billy Joel play those fast notes at the beginning of Angry Young Man? What is that crazy chord progression in that Queen song? What makes a spanish guitar solo sound so, well, spanish? I want to spark that curiosity in others, and teach them how to analyze, describe, appreciate and play music. I believe that this can not be accomplished by simply playing the notes on the page. Your musical appreciation is enriched by a knowledge of how and why music works, and the ability to put your own musical stamp on whatever you play.
I'm not interested in teaching you how to play exactly what Jerry Lee Lewis plays in his recording of "Great Balls of Fire". I'm interested in teaching you how to play the song like you want to play it. I'll teach you the blues scale, the blues form, right hand licks, comping styles, different bass lines, and I'll teach you how to use your ear to broaden your musical skills. By the time we're done, you'll know how to play Great Balls of Fire...and Johnny B Goode, Whole Lotta Shakin, All Shook Up, Rock This Town, Jump Jive and Wail, and virtually any other blues song that you want to play. All of the musical tricks you'll learn can be applied to various songs and styles, so we're never limiting your potential.
